It was a marriage made in combat heaven; the most celebrated flyer of WWII...the most awesome fighter squadron in the Pacific...and the legendary Zero-killer. Assigned to pull together a squadron -- VMF-214 -- to fly combat missions in the Solomon Islands, Marine Major Gregory “Pappy” Boyington gathered a group of 27 pilots, and after just a few weeks of training in the F4U Corsair they flew their first mission. While the Corsair was not as maneuverable as the Japanese zeros, it had the advantage of speed, durability and climbing rate. This quality model from Franklin Mint is approximately 8-1⁄4" long and 10" wide.
