Damascus Steel

Damascus steel is a hot forged method originating in India in probably the 3rd century.  The metal has a visible surface pattern and often a texture.  Blades forged of Damascus are strong and hold the edge well. Modern Damascus is made using a pattern weld forged with alternating sheets of carbon and stainless steels.  Historically a technique known as wootzing was used.  This process has been lost over the ages, but the blades produced were of legendary quality. Modern bladesmiths have been unable to reproduce the same chemical composition found in the ancient blades.
