The Cap That Marked a Soldier
A kepi told you a man's rank and his branch before he said a word. Union blue, Confederate gray, the flat crown and short bill were standard issue on both sides of the line, cheap enough to produce by the thousand and simple enough to hold its shape through a campaign. It is one of the most recognizable pieces of Civil War kit still made today, and one of the easiest ways to finish a reenactment uniform correctly.

What is the difference between a Union and Confederate kepi?
Mainly color and insignia. Union kepis ran dark blue, Confederate gray or butternut, with branch and rank insignia differing by army and unit.
Are these kepis accurate enough for reenactment?
Built to it. Correct wool weight, proper crown height, and period accurate stitching are what separate a reenactment grade kepi from a costume piece, and that is the standard ours are held to.
