Steel That Earns Its Keep
A katana is not a myth dressed up as a blade. It is folded steel, worked hot and cold until the edge holds a temper the spine cannot, a design built by smiths who had one job and did it for centuries. What separates a good one from a wall hanger comes down to three things: the steel, the temper line, and the fit between blade and handle. We build to that standard, not to a costume rack's idea of what looks sharp in a photograph.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I look for in a real samurai sword?
Full tang construction first, the blade should run the length of the handle in one piece, not a stub welded on. After that, check the steel, high carbon steel holds an edge and takes a temper line, stainless mostly does not.
What is a hamon, and does it matter?
The hamon is the visible line where differential hardening meets the blade, hard edge against a softer spine. A genuine hamon comes from the heat treatment itself, not an acid etch, and it is one of the clearest signs of real construction versus a display knockoff.
Is a katana practical to maintain, or is it high upkeep?
Not much upkeep, provided it is done right. A light coat of oil, a soft cloth, and keeping the blade dry after handling covers most of it. Left dry and neglected, any carbon steel blade will rust.
What is the difference between a katana, wakizashi, and tanto?
Length, mostly. The katana runs long for a two handed draw and cut, the wakizashi is a shorter companion blade, and the tanto is a fixed blade dagger, all three traditionally carried together by the same warrior class.
