Delivered to New York Harbor in pieces, assembly began in 1885 and the statue was dedicated by President Grover Cleveland on October 28, 1886. French politician Édouard de Laboulaye hoped the statue would also inspire his own people to create a democracy, as they were faced with a repressive monarchy at the time.
