The M-1909 Bolo Knife was designed to aid US soldiers with jungle foliage that they found themselves in with incursions into Cuba and the Philippines, where natives used similar sized machetes. It was designed to be carried as a belt knife from its first production at the Springfield Armory in 1909 to its final production in 1915. Only 17,540 were produced at the Springfield Armory making originals pretty rare.

Beginning in 1917 a variant of the M-1909, designated as M-1917 Bolo Knife was introduced. Tempered, high carbon steel blade with proper markings of the era. Steel finger guard and wood grip. Heavy leather scabbard has slotting pin in the metal throat and accurately replicates Rock Island Arsenals issue from the era.

I'm very happy with the knife overall. It seems to be made very well and sharp on arrival. The knife has the Springfield Armory markings on the blade but the sheath is marked Rock Island Armory, so which is it ?

I am extremely pleased with my bolo!  On a recent trip with my wife to the Philippines to visit our family, I was in search of acquiring my very own bolo, however; I was unable to find one for sale.  So after we came back home I decided to get the next best thing and order one from Atlanta Cutlery.  I had ordered a U.S. Army Officer saber in the past for my brother and we were both very pleased with it. The craftsmanship of my bolo is exquisite, and although I have not used it in the field yet, it seems to be service ready.  I am very happy with the personalized initial inscription option, it looks marvelous.  The markings on the bolo and the scabbard make them look original and it is a true masterpiece and a wonderful value for the price paid.  Thank you for providing me with this wonderful heirloom piece, which is also service ready and will be cherished by me and passed down through the generations!

The overall set is a pretty decent copy of the fairly rare original. The blade markings are clear and larger than the originals which should help deter faking this bolo. The scabbard is of useful quality and well assembled for general use. The guard is slightly thinner than the original but well shaped. The grip is comfortable although the brass pins through the grip are smaller than the original and actually should be pins passing through brass burrs, peened over and smoothed.  While the wood has a nice grain it is much lighter in color than the original walnut. The blade came with a factory edge which is plenty sharp as far as I am concerned. I have already used it to cut branches from a tree I am breaking up and it worked very well.  This is a good working copy.  Joe T..

Now this is a knife!!!  The U.S. general issue 1909 Bolo knife is an awesome weapon and a great all around "chopper". A little heavy but very heavy duty and very well made. Very nice heavy duty leather sheath too.
