Using naturally occurring materials, with as little alteration as possible to preserve its natural beauty, each handle is minimally worked to save most of its original shape. Although black is the most common color, it can be brown, tan, or green. When hematite (iron oxide) is present, it produces red and brown varieties. If tiny gas bubbles remained in the lava flow during crystallization, green varieties were created, as well as others with a golden sheen, or types with dark bands or mottling in gray, green, or even yellow.
