OVERVIEW

In the history of Central Asian curved blades, the Kilij has one of the more interesting blade profiles. It has the gracefully curved shape we picture when we hear “saber”, but has an innovative widening at the end that increases the chopping power. This blade shape enabled a thrusting attack, giving it a tactical advantage over extremely curved swords like the Shamshir. The Kilij was prominent during the Seljuk, Timurid, Mamluk, and Ottoman empires.

Curved blades so impressed the European armies that crossed paths with them that Western nations soon developed similar swords that are still used today for ceremonial dress.
