This impressive knife is copied from a unique early American Bowie featured on page 56 of The Antique Bowie Knife Book. Printed in 1990, it was one of the first books to showcase a large collection of some of the world’s finest and rarest Bowie's. The original knife was unmarked, but general opinion among knife scholars is that it was probably made by the Ames Manufacturing Company in Chicopee, Massachusetts, a large-scale maker of swords, cannons, and cannon balls during the Civil War.
This historical Bowie reproduction is over a foot long. The pommel is not a separate piece, and the one-piece grip and guard are both made of solid brass. The “fish scale” grip is identical to the 1841 Naval Cutlass; brass was a rot and rust-free material that kept maintenance to a minimum. This replica comes with a brass and leather sheath with the same tooled pattern as the original.
